Team Development for Executive & Management Teams

The Challenge for Leaders

For all the skills and experience you may bring to your role as the team leader, let’s face it — it’s difficult to be the guide for the business, the shepherd and overseer of the process and team dynamics, and a fully participating member in the process and implementation at the same time, all at the same time.

On top of that, so often team members really don’t know each other very well, so there may be gaps in trust that cause inefficiencies and breakdowns. In the crush of business life today, it’s easy and seductive to move quickly just to make sure business gets done. But, there is a point at which the law of diminishing returns kicks in.

Then it’s time to slow down and attend to the health of your team, which not only allows you to go faster again but you’ll also get far better results. As a coach consultant who is outside the organization, I provide an objective perspective, and expertise in designing and facilitating a process and structures that help your team develop so you get the efficiencies, productivity, and well-being you’re seeking.

How it works

Every team needs some frameworks through which to see and understand what’s working and what’s not working in order to come up with better ways of interacting and doing business. Whether you’ve got a team where members really aren’t on the same page, a team of all-stars who don’t function as a champion team, or a team that’s very good that wants to go to great, there’s always room for team development.

Even when teams are high-performing, there needs to be periodic maintenance as it’s easy to get complacent, to go into groupthink, or for certain pesky issues to go underground and eventually undermine what’s going well.

The first thing I do is to help the team assess it’s effectiveness, which we can do through both interviews and/or a variety of personal, team, and organizational assessments. Once the team has a shared picture of current reality, there’s a foundation for a new team conversation in which team members can build trust and then problem-solve and execute much more productively as a cohesive team.

Based on what your team needs, this is a custom-designed process, including assessment and data collection, reflection and appreciative inquiry about the data, defining the preferred future, problem-solving, goal planning and action steps. The format can include interviews, team retreats (1-3 days) and periodic follow-up meetings.
